Payment of Long Awaited Allowances To CPS Retirees @ Advanced Stage, Says Nwaiwu

There is strong indication that Retirees under the Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS) will soon receive their long-awaited allowances, as the payment process has reached the Debt Management Office (DMO).

The National Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Pensioners, Contributory Pension Scheme Sector (NUPCPS), Mr. Sylva Nwaiwu, disclosed this while updating members on the ₦758 billion approved for CPS retirees and other related issues.

“We are on the right track at the DMO, and we assure you that we are closer to payment day than ever before”, he assured.

Mr. Nwaiwu expressed gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Members of the Federal Executive Council for their commitment to the welfare of retirees.

“We owe this government, under the leadership of President Tinubu, a lot of thanks, as well as the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, the Office of the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, and the Honourable Minister of Finance, whom he described as Godly man.

“Everything he told us on the day of our protest has come to pass. We are grateful to all these Nigerians whom God has decided to use to wipe away our tears at this time,” Nwaiwu noted.

The NUPCPS national chairman urged members to remain patient, assuring them that payment will be made “very soon” and that all CPS retirees will receive their allowances in full.

Quoting media reports, Mr. Nwaiwu noted that both the President and the Director-General of PENCOM are eager to ensure that payments are implemented as quickly as possible.

He expressed delight that because of the success story of the union, a number of CPS retirees’ want to join the union as members, adding that they must be given the opportunity to do so by creating platform for them to achieve their mission.

The national chairman said that the union has selected August 14th and 15th, 2025 to do so, adding that the State branches of the union are at liberty to extend the days, if they are not able to accomplish the exercise within two days, including the online registration centres in the country.

Commenting on the statue of NUPCPS, the National Chairman said the union was officially inaugurated by the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC on the 27th of February 2017, with the approval and consent of the Honourable Minister of Labour and Employment at that time.”

According to him, the inauguration was done publicly at the Labour House, Abuja.

Mr Sylva Nwaiwu concluded by thanking members for their support in the achievements recorded so far and urged them to be patient while waiting for the payment.
