Members of the 10th House of Representatives have elected Hon. Tajudeen Abass as the Speaker of the House of Representatives.

He was elected unopposed few hours ago.

The former Chairman, House Committee on Transport is a 4th term member of the Green Chamber.

Rt. Hon. Abass, who is from Zaria federal Constituency, Kaduna State, is described as the most productive member of the 9th House of Representatives by virtue of numbers of motions and bills he raised.

Abass sponsored 72 bills, with 21 signed into law.

The House also elected Hon Ben Kalu as the Deputy Speaker.

For Speakership position, Abass contested against the outgoing Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Ahmed Wase and another member, Aminu Jaji.

Wase is one of the aggrieved speakership aspirants, who are aggrieved with the leadership zoning plan of the All Progressives Congress for the next Assembly, which favours Tajudeen Abbas.

Abbas defeated him and Jaji with a wide margin, with almost all the lawmakers voting for him.

Benjamin Kalu also emerged as the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives.

He was elected to the position by his colleagues unopposed.

Before his recent position, he was the Immediate past Spokesman of the House Committee on Media and Public Affairs.

Kalu was nominated for the position by Babajimi Benson from Lagos State and seconded by Khadijat Bukar Abba Ibrahim from Yobe state.

Kalu is the APC endorsed candidate for the position.

Benson said the nomination was necessary in the interest of inclusion and addressing perceived marginalisation.

After calling for more nomination with none forthcoming, the Clerk to the National Assembly declared Kalu elected as Deputy Speaker and proceeded to administer the oath of office on him.

Normal legislative business resumes tomorrow, Wednesday, by 11am.
