Group Cautions Youths To Avoid Irregular Migration As 155 Stranded Nigerian Migrants Return From Libya

A Non Governmental Group, Universal Migration Enlightenment Centre, has advised the youths against irregular migration to Europe and America.

The Chairman of the group, Dr Williams Azuma Ijoma, who is also the President, Global Migration Research Institute, Maryland USA, gave the advice in Abuja in reaction to the repatriation of 155 Nigerian Migrants from Libya.

“My organisations are in the forefront of educating youths on Migration issues and the need for them to avoid what can threaten their livelihood”, Dr Ijoma explained.

He noted that the groups are already concluding plans to hold a Two Day National Workshop on Migration Issues in Abuja, Nigeria on the 26th and 27th September, 2023.

“The workshop will be attended by Senior government officials, Policy Makers, Youth Associations, Security Agents and the general public”.

The International Organisation for Migration (IOM), in collaboration with the federal government, repatriated 155 Nigerian irregular migrants stranded across various parts of Libya.

The returnees arrived at the Cargo Wing of Murtala Muhammad International Airport, Lagos, late Tuesday evening on board an Al Buraq Air Boeing 737-800 with registration number 5A-DMG.

Out of the 155 returnees that arrived, 125 were females, 22 males and eight infants.

The returnees were received by officials of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Port Health Service, National Commission for Refugees, Migrants and Internally Displaced Persons (NCFRM) and Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN).

The Executive Secretary of UMEC, Chief Barth Ikiebe, says that, “The Universal Migration Enlightenment Centre, Nigeria is working in partnership with the Global Migration Research Institute, Maryland, USA, to address the problem of irregular migration in Nigeria and Africa”.
